Hair Transplant Cost: The Complete UK Price Guide

If you are researching hair transplant cost, the quote will usually depend on graft range, method, doctor involvement, clinic setting, and aftercare. This page explains what commonly affects price, what should be included, and what to compare before moving ahead, including the per-graft maths and the older "hair plugs" technique patients still ask about.

What to know

What usually affects hair transplant cost in London

Hair transplant cost in London usually depends on the number of grafts being discussed, the method proposed, the pattern of hair loss, the donor area, and how involved the treatment plan needs to be.

Quotes can also differ because clinics structure treatment differently. One quote may reflect a lighter case with simpler planning, while another may include more grafts, more clinical time, or a broader aftercare package.

  • The graft range usually has a major effect on the quote.
  • Method choice, such as FUE, DHI, or an unshaven approach, may change complexity and time.
  • Donor characteristics, coverage goals, and long-term planning also shape price.

What to know

What should be included in the quote

A useful quote should explain more than the procedure itself. Patients usually want to know whether consultation, treatment-day planning, aftercare reviews, medication, washing guidance, and post-op support are included.

Patients may also want the quote to make clear whether items such as a PRP session, post-operative medication, and an aftercare pack are included or treated as extras.

Clarity matters because two quotes can look similar at first and still cover different levels of support once treatment day has passed.

  • Ask whether aftercare reviews and follow-up contact are included.
  • Ask whether PRP, medication, post-op products, or an aftercare pack are included or charged separately.
  • Ask whether a Sapphire FUE approach or another method is being proposed and why it suits your case.
  • Ask whether the quote reflects the full planned treatment or only the starting procedure day.

What to know

Why London quotes can vary so much

Two London quotes can differ because the treatment plan, graft estimate, clinical team structure, setting, and aftercare model are not always the same. A lower quote is not automatically better value, and a higher quote is not automatically better care.

For many patients, London is not only about price. It is also about easier consultation access, local follow-up, and being able to judge the clinic environment and planning process more comfortably before committing.

  • Compare what is included, not only the first figure you are shown.
  • Compare who performs the procedure and how responsibilities are structured.
  • Compare recovery support and local follow-up, especially if reassurance matters to you.

What to know

Hair implants, hair plugs, and hair plantation: same procedure, different names

Patients search for this procedure under several names, and it helps to know they usually mean the same thing. "Hair implants" and "hair plantation" are commonly used alternatives to "hair transplant", and the underlying surgery is the same: healthy follicles are moved from a donor area to thinning or balding areas.

"Hair plugs" is different. It refers to an older technique from the 1980s and earlier, where large round grafts of four to twenty hairs were punched out and reinserted in rows. The result was an unnatural, tufted look, often described as doll's hair, because the angle and density did not match how hair actually grows.

Nobody reputable still performs hair plugs. Modern follicular unit techniques such as FUE and DHI move individual follicular units, usually one to four hairs each, and place them at the natural growth angle. If a clinic still uses the word "plugs" to describe its own work, that is worth asking about directly.

  • Hair implants and hair plantation are search terms for the same procedure as a hair transplant.
  • Hair plugs were a 1980s technique using large grafts. It is not what modern clinics do.
  • FUE and DHI move individual follicular units and are priced by graft range and method, not by the outdated term.

What to know

What a hair transplant actually costs per graft

Across the UK market, per-graft pricing usually sits between £3 and £5, and it is worth looking at both ends of that range honestly. At £3 per graft, a 3,000-graft procedure works out at roughly £9,000. At £5 per graft, the same procedure reaches roughly £15,000, which is close to where several legacy Harley Street and Wimpole Street clinics price their treatment.

Our own fixed London prices for eligible cases start at £2,750 for Sapphire FUE up to 3,000 grafts, and £3,500 up to 5,000 grafts. Every package includes one complimentary PRP session, post-operative medication, and an aftercare pack, with no arrangement fees. Measured crudely per graft, that is under £1 a graft. We would still argue you should not choose on that basis alone.

Per-graft pricing is a weak measure because it rewards a headline number rather than the plan behind it. A quote built purely around a low per-graft rate can leave out aftercare, medication, doctor involvement, and PRP, and graft counts themselves are sometimes estimated generously to make the per-graft figure look smaller. Ask what the total figure includes before comparing it to any per-graft rate you have seen quoted elsewhere.

  • UK market per-graft pricing typically runs £3–£5, which puts a 3,000-graft procedure at roughly £9,000–£15,000 depending on the clinic.
  • A fixed, all-in price protects you from a graft count that grows once treatment begins.
  • Always ask whether aftercare, medication, and PRP sit inside the quoted figure or outside it.

The price story

What many patients expect to pay is often not the full picture.

One of the biggest pricing shifts in this category is the gap between what patients assume a premium UK clinic will cost and what they may actually be quoted once the route, graft range, and inclusions are explained properly.

Comparison

What to compare when reviewing a London quote

A useful London quote should help you judge more than the price itself. These are some of the points patients usually compare before deciding.

What to compareWhat to askWhy it matters
Graft range and coverage
Ask how many grafts are being discussed, which areas are being treated, and whether the plan is conservative or aggressive. This helps you judge whether the quote matches your pattern of loss and long-term donor planning.
Method
Ask why FUE, DHI, or another approach is being suggested for your case.Different methods can affect complexity, treatment time, and price.
Who performs the procedure
Ask how the procedure is carried out, whether by GMC-registered doctors, and how the wider clinical team is involved. This helps you understand accountability, oversight, and how treatment decisions are made.
Aftercare and follow-up
Ask what reviews, washing guidance, medication, and post-op support are included after treatment day.Good follow-up can make a major difference to confidence and recovery.
Quote structure
Ask what is included in the total figure and what might still be separate. This makes it easier to compare real value rather than a headline number alone.

Frequently asked questions

Direct answers to the questions patients usually ask next.

How much does a hair transplant in London cost?

Across London, quotes vary widely with graft range, method, doctor involvement, and aftercare, which is why a generic figure is rarely useful. Our own London packages are fixed: £2,750 for Sapphire FUE or £3,250 for DHI up to 3,000 grafts, and £3,500 or £4,000 up to 5,000 grafts, for eligible cases.

What usually changes the quote most?

The main factors are usually graft range, method, donor characteristics, treatment complexity, and what is included around aftercare and follow-up. The more tailored the plan, the more specific the quote should become.

Should consultation and aftercare be included in the quote?

That depends on the clinic, which is why it should be asked directly. Many patients want to know whether reviews, medication, post-op guidance, follow-up contact, PRP, and an aftercare pack are included before they compare one London option with another.

Why can two London quotes be very different?

Two quotes may reflect different graft estimates, different methods, different levels of clinical involvement, or different aftercare structures. The safest comparison is not only the number itself, but what sits behind it.

Does a higher price always mean a better clinic?

No. Price alone is not proof of quality. What matters is whether the quote is tied to a clear plan, realistic expectations, proper regulation, and an aftercare structure you can actually rely on once treatment day is over.

Is London always more expensive than Turkey?

London and Turkey often serve different priorities. Turkey may appeal on overall cost, while London may appeal on convenience, local consultation, and easier aftercare. The right choice depends on what matters most to you, not only on the first figure you see.

Can women use the same cost logic?

Yes, in the sense that suitability, graft planning, method, and treatment scope still shape the quote. The underlying cause of thinning and whether transplant is appropriate at all should also be part of the discussion before price is judged.

How much are hair implants in the UK?

"Hair implants" is simply another name people use for a hair transplant, so the pricing logic is the same. Expect the quote to depend on graft range, method, and what aftercare is included, rather than on which of the two terms a clinic happens to use.

What is the cost per graft for a hair transplant?

UK per-graft pricing typically runs £3 to £5. That means a 3,000-graft procedure can cost anywhere from roughly £9,000 to £15,000 once priced purely per graft. We price as a fixed package instead, because a per-graft rate alone does not tell you what is included.

How much would 5,000 grafts cost?

At typical UK per-graft rates of £3 to £5, 5,000 grafts can cost roughly £15,000 to £25,000 depending on the clinic and what the quote includes. Our fixed London package for up to 5,000 grafts is £3,500 with Sapphire FUE or £4,000 with DHI. Not every donor area can safely supply that many grafts, so whether your case fits that band is confirmed at consultation.

What are hair plugs, and why don't clinics use them anymore?

Hair plugs were an older technique from the 1980s that used large, multi-hair grafts placed in visible rows, producing an unnatural, tufted result. Modern hair transplants use individual follicular units instead, placed at the natural growth angle, and "hair plugs" is no longer how any reputable UK clinic operates.
